Part 1: Understanding the ‘The Elderly Challenge’

Holiday work - Part 1

1. Housing for seniors
2. Accessibility for seniors
3. Caring for seniors
4. Opportunities for seniors

Housing for Seniors: Elder-Friendly Housing

Like us, Seniors also need shelters (Housing). In Singapore, with limited spacing, some people think that it is a waste of space and money while they can just leave them to the Nursing home.
However, Singapore has been trying to build the elderly's HDB flats. However, there are some basic needs that the elderly need in his/her daily life (e.g. less-steep stairs, equal ground level, not too tall building, etc).

Accessibility for seniors: Barrier-free society

This is one of the most impotent needs that elderly needs. Like us, the elderly also need to move around at least for the important ones like getting groceries, visiting the doctor. As for accessibility, in the public transports, we have most of the elderly's needs like low-floor, step-free and wheelchair accessibility. However, they need more than that to move around like us.

Caring for seniors: Holistic affordable healthcare and eldercare

Elderly need more are than us. Moreover they it is hard for them to afford the medical fees and they could not make it if they need to have a major surgery and medical help. The government is giving the the elderly Medisave but in case of serious illness, they need help from their loved ones.

Opportunities for seniors: Active lifestyles and well-being

Seniors need much help financially. So, they have to work for themselves to earn a living. The Singapore government is trying to help the seniors financially. However, that will not be enough for them. He also get help from charity and donations. They may get enough money if their loved ones or relatives helped them.

CAI has been planning to build more elderly-friendly houses with most of their needs. They also consider about the transport, accessibility, entertainment and others they needed.

We can ensure that there are all the facilities that an elder need to visit the caretaker and we can have reasonable and affordable price for the seniors to care for themselves.

As a student of SST, I will try my best to come up with innovate ideas to help these seniors with their daily works. I will also care for them if I see any elderly on the road struggling to do something. I will observe what are the difficulties that an elderly face and try to help them.
